Notes for William McClellan BARNUM

From the "Standard History of Waupaca County, Wisconsin" by John M. Ware, 1917. William M. Barnum has been one of the influential newspaper men of Wisconsin for many years, and is now editor of the Clintonville Tribune of Waupaca County. Through his paper and individually he has exercised much influence on county affairs, and has been a working member of the republican party for many years. For two terms Mr. Barnum was on the county board of commissioners, and for three years he was a member of the school board of Clintonville. A native of Wisconsin, born January 13, 1862, he is a son of Marcus H. and Phoebe E. (Reynolds) Barnum, both of whom were natives of New York State. His mother was born in the City of Albany. His father was also a well known newspaper man in Wisconsin, and at one time conducted the Torch of Liberty at Wausau. In the family were five children: Charles, of Minocqua, Wisconsin; Ada, wife of A. V. Gearhart of Wausau, Wisconsin; William M.; Marcus H. of Washington, District of Columbia; May, wife of Ed Barry of Saint Paul; and Elizabeth, who lives, in Minocqua. William M. Barnum received his first instruction in the public schools of Wausau, Wisconsin, but at the age of eleven he went to New York State with his sister and remained there three years. His early opportunities were limited and his education and his opportunities in life were gained as a result of his individual striving to make the best of his time and ability. On returning to Wisconsin from New York he was employed in the mills at Wausau until he was about eighteen years of age. He then entered an apprenticeship at the printer's trade, and has followed that business for many years. In 1892 he bought and for several years published the Republican at New London, from there went to Shawano, Wisconsin, and from Shawano came to Clintonville, where he bought the Clintonville Sun. He conducted that paper one year and in October, 1901, he bought the Clintonville Tribune, and has since been actively identified with the management and the editorial policy of that very excellent weekly. In October, 1891, Mr. Barnum married Miss Edith M. Young, daughter of Capt. Frank Young. They have one child Helen L.
