Cecilia Atkins was born in New York and moved west with her parents as a small girl. She settled with them in Kirkwood, Illinois, where she eventually met and married George A. Barnum. Her husband enlisted in the 83rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry the day following their marriage and she followed him to the South after his regiment was permanently located. She remained near him throughout his Civil War service. Following his death she requested a pension (Widows Certificate No. 654299).
From an unidentified contemporary newspaper: Mrs. Cecilia Barnum, one of Kirkwood's well loved and highly respected ladies, passed away at her home at four o'clock Tuesday morning, following a sort illness, caused by heart trouble and other complications.
Mrs. Barnum had been in poor health for some time but was not considered ill until Friday. Even after this she became much better Saturday and Sunday. On Monday her condition became worse and she passed away Tuesday morning.
Her death came as a shock to her friends, a good many of whom did not knoe of her illness. In the death of this good woman Kirkwood loses a splendid Christian character.
Cecilia Atkins was born in Lewis County, N.Y. February 12th, 1843, and came with her parents to Kirkwood when a small girl and has lived in this community since that time.
She was united in marriage to George A. Barnum August 11th, 1862. Mr. Barnum had just enlisted in the 83rd Ill. Infantry and soon left for the South where Mrs. Barnum joined him after his regiment was permanently located, and remained there the greater part of his army service.
After the war they located on a farm east of Kirkwood where they lived until they removed to Kirkwood.
One child, Nina M. was born to this union. She passed away March 8th, 1883, at the age of twelve years.
Mr. Barnum departed this life February 1st 1901.
The deceased was a member of the M.E. Church of Kirkwood and was devoted and faithful in the service for her Master.
Funeral services were held from the late home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, in charge of her pastor, Dr. Brown
