Notes for Elizabeth BARNHAM
A contemporary engraving of Elizabeth is posted to the Barnum Family Genealogy website, at http://www.barnum.org. [Engraving by Lombart, after a portrait by Anthony van Dyck, in the National Portrait Gallery, London].
Elizabeth Barnham, Countess of Castlehaven, was the (1st) wife of Mervyn (Mervin), 2nd Earl of Castlehaven and Lord Audley. She was a co-heiress of Benedict Barnham, a prominent London alderman. She married Earl Castlehaven (then Lord Audley) sometime before 1612. Her inheritance helped to finance the purchase of Fonthill Gifford, a lavish Wiltshire Estate that became the family's primary home in England. When she died (sometime between 1622 and 1624) the Countess left the Earl with six children.
