Note from the historian for the Town of Hartland in Niagara County New York (June 2003). "One of our first settlers was Isaac Southwell, who evidently was actually Hiram Southwell. In our local cemetery is the grave of Hiram Southwell, who died in 1807. It is the earliest marked grave in Niagara County. I recently was given a copy of the search and survey for the property that Hiram and Polly settled on. It shows that Polly purchased land from the Holland Land Company in 1813. In 1825 Polly and her husband James Crane sold some or all of the property. I am having difficulty figuring this part out, but in 1835 the deed shows Hiram I. Southwell and his wife Elizabeth selling some of the land. Was this Hiram's son? Our town history also shows Zebulon Barnum as being one of the 1803 settlers. Our Town was incorporated in 1812. The tax rolls for 1813 show Zebulon owning 247 acres in our town."
The grave of Hiram Southwell is the oldest marked grave in Niagara County. Europeans have been visiting and settling in Niagara County since 1629 (Old Fort Niagara and surrounding area). The property that is now the Hartland Central Cemetery was once the land owned by Hiram and Polly. When Hiram died Polly buried him on their property and someone carved his name into an eighteen inch wide and twenty four inch high piece of sandstone. A deed shows that Hiram and his wife Elizabeth sold some part of the property in 1835.
