Willard was a 23-year-old private in Company "F", 210th Engineer Regiment, US Army, at the time of his death. It is likely that he was one of 43,000 US servicemen who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic while mobilized for WWI. The cause of death during that pandemic was often listed as pneumonia rather than influenza.
From the Banner, Sonora, California 15 November 1918: Willard Barnum died of pneumonia at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on Oct. 18th. The young man was known to many people in Sonora, having worked in this city for several years. He was at one time employed at the Victoria hotel.
