In 1917 a patent was issued in his name for the homestead that had belonged to his father. He stated that he was single, gave his occupation as farmer and his age as 21 years. The house was given a value of $1,000, a 30x40 stable $1,500 and a hen house and blacksmith house at $300. In asking to have his own homestead canceled, he stated "That on account of the sickness and age of my parents I have been unable to leave to complete the last month of my resident duties. All but one month of my resident duties were completed on the homestead and all buildings and breaking were completed which improvements were worth at the time I left at least two hundred Dollars. I believe the buildings have since been stolen."
