Stella's parents and brother Americus were enumerated in Carlton, Michigan in the 1850 census. Stella was the grand-daughter of Zebulon Barnum and Betsey Ferster, who moved to Barry County, Michigan, in 1835, and named Carlton Township after their homeland in Orleans County, New York. When Estella Barnum was born on September 3, 1851, her father, Melvin, was 31, and her mother, Polly, was 21. She had three brothers. She died on May 27, 1871, at the age of 19, and was buried in Carlton, New York.
