Notes for Floyd SMITH

Floyd Smith graduated from Lyndonville High School in 1912 and attended Rochester (New York) Business Institute. He started an appliance store in his home on North Lyndonville Road, and in 1942 opened a store on Main Street in the village. Since appliances weren't available during World War II, he stocked novelties and dry goods, resuming his General Electric franchise after the war and operating it until the late 1950's. Floyd and Jessie were still residing on North Lyndonville Road in 1976.

From The Niagara Falls Gazette, Friday, August 9, 1935: Seventy members of the Barnum family attended the annual reunion on Wednesday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Smith. Families were represented from Buffalo, Middleport, Detroit, Mich., Barker, Gaines and Lyndonville. The president, Earl Barnum, presided at the business meeting. One death was reported during the year. Mrs. George Smith was the oldest of the Barnum family and Mrs. Effie Barnum of Gaines, the oldest member present. Nancy Parsels, the youngest. The officers for 1935 are: President, Arah C. Barnum; vice president, Earl Barnum; secretary, Mrs. Floyd Smith, re-elected; treasurer, Mrs. Florence Foss, re-elected, all of Lyndonville. On account of rain the company adjourned to the Grange hall, where a picnic supper was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Barnum of Gaines will be hosts for next year.
