A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Laura Jane BARNUM

The following information was received on 4 December 2014 from descendant Ernie Barnum (barnum1@telus.net): I have some information for you. I discovered on the Stanhope, Ontario, museum website a copy of the marriage registration from the United Church archives for the union of Thomas W. Wilson, age 23 and Sara (Laura Jane) Barnum, age 19 at Minden, Ontario on March 10, 1880. I had earlier verified her birthdate, November 30, 1860 at Brighton township, Northumberland County and her baptismal date of May 5, 1866 at Stanhope township, Peterborough County Ontario, from the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal registers. Ancestry.ca gives her death as January 15, 1884.  I have yet to discover whether there were any children. Laura Jane’s brother, John, had a daughter Laura Jane born March 26, 1884, who was probably named after her aunt.  When I noticed that Laura Jane’s brother Andrew, junior had married Harriet Amelia Wilson, I looked for a connection.  In the 1871 Canada West census,I discovered Thomas W’s parents, listed on the marriage register as Alexander and Martha Wilson, living in Cavan, Durham East with their family.  The names, ages, and deducted birth years are as follows: Alexander,38, 1833,  Martha, 38, 1833,  Mary Jane, 17, 1854,  Thomas W, 16, 1855,  Willington A, 12, 1859,  Robert A, 10,1861,  Harriet A, 8, 1863,  Angeline, 6, 1865,  Emma T, 4, 1867,  Nelson W, 2, 1869,  James, one month, March 1871( the census was dated April 2)    I also verified Andrew Barnum junior’s birthdate as February 9, 1856 at Brighton and his baptism on May 5, 1866 at Stanhope from the Wesleyan registers. I have some birthdates for Andrew and Harriet’s children taken from the 1901 Canada census, which  points to a marriage about 1880-1882, which i will confirm. Ancestry.ca has Harriet’s death on July 28, 1895 at Chaffey, Muskoka, Ontario. Their first child, Ross or Russ, was born on December 31, 1883.  His name given on the 1891 Canada census was Herman D.  Elva was born on December 8, 1885,  Olive May on February 15, 1888 and Stanley S on February 5, 1893.   I also have verified some information about some of Andrew’s brothers from photocopies of the baptismal records of the Anglican Diocese of Ontario in Kingston.  John was born on April 25, 1837 and baptized on June 11, 1837.  Charles was born on April 20, 1839 and baptized on October 29, 1839. Nelson was born on April 20, 1842 and baptized on October 11, 1842.  Their father, Andrew Barnum Senior, was baptized as an adult on October 29, 1839, at St. John’s church, Murray township, Northumberland County, age 26.  He died at Minden, Ontario.  I am searching for further information. Ernie

The Following information comes from MJ Clark: Laura is my great-great grandmother, She did have 2 sons; my great grandfather Muirville, born in 1882, and Garnet, born in 1884, several days before Laura's death. It took until April 28, 1884 for her to be buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
