One of the mysteries for descendant Anne Philiben is why the editor of the Ashtabula Sentinel allowed 10-year-old Libbie Barnum (her great grandmother) to work in the Sentinel office and become a linotypist and printer. A few years ago, she found that Carrie Barnum was listed in the 1860 US Census as a printer. It's still not certain whether that Carrie was Caroline Barnum. The following wedding announcement appeared in the Ashtabula Sentinel. in January, 1863:
"In Jefferson, January 1st, by Rev. A.D. Olds, Miss Carrie N. Barnum to Mr. J.W. Mattison. The Lady in this case; has been one of the compositors of the Sentinel Office for the greater part of the last eight years. We part with her with regret, trusting that abundant as well as deserved happiness will attend her through a long life."
In the Ashtabula records, J.W. Mattison is recorded as Johnston L. Mattison. Unfortunately there is no trace of them in 1870.
