A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Her given name also appears in some sources as Tirze or Thirza. Thursa Barnum was the daughter of Matthew Barnum, Jr., who was a first cousin once removed of Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum. Mathew Starr Barnum, Thursa's half-brother by their father's second marriage, inherited a portion of P.T.'s estate and when he died some of his estate was left to Davis descendants of Thursa (Barnum) Davis. Mollie (Davis) VanArtsdale used to say that her father called a certain rocking chair in her house "The Barnum Estate", since she had purchased it with her inheritance from Mathew S. Barnum. A note that came with a check for $40 said: "Enclosed please find a certified check for the amount of your distributive share, as one of the heirs of the estate of Mathew S. Barnum late of Sharon (CT), deceased."
The Barbour Collection of Vital Records gives her birthdate as 5 Sep 1784.
Gravestone inscription": In memory of Thirza Davis, wife of Eli Davis, who departed this life October 8th AD 1852, aged 68 years, 1 mo. & 3 dys.
