He began his photographic career when he opened a small studio in Madison, Kansas. After attending the Southern School of Photography in McMinnville, Tennessee, he moved to Washington, DC where he worked as a photographer for the Department of Agriculture. After rising to Senior Photographer, he went to work at the Government Printing Office Photographic Department. During his time with the government, he also co-owned the Photo Arts Studio with his partner Grover Plew.
