He was the highway supervisor and a dairy farmer in the town of
Denmark for many years.
From the Watertown Daily Times, April 21, 1994: L. D. Barnum, Jr., 68, Dies in Watertown, New York. L. D. Barnum, Jr., 68, of 21828 Lane Road, died Tuesday at the House of the Good Samaritan after being stricken that morning at his home. Burial will be in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River.
Surviving are his wife, Alice; four sons, Anthony M., Antwerp, James L. D., Lowville, Wayne J., Fredericksburg, Va., and Nathan S., Watertown; three daughters, Mrs. Terry (Linda) Nevil, Williamson, and Mrs. Christopher (Alice) Richardson and Mrs. Steven (Ann) Adams, both of Watertown; nine grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A son, Steven, and four sisters, Cozette Garrett, Vera Staie, Marion Boyce and Pearl Dekin, died before him.
Born Aug. 2, 1925, in the town of Denmark, son of L. D. and May Paddock Barnum, he attended Deer River and Carthage schools and married Alice Makuch Jan. 25, 1948, in Trinity Episcopal Church, Lowville. Mr. and Mrs. Barnum owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Denmark until selling the business in 1980. Mr. Barnum began working for the town of Denmark Highway Department in 1952 and became highway superintendent in 1964. He retired in 1981. He had worked for the Northern Asphalt Co. in Watertown since 1981.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown American Legion Post 61 and the New York State Highway Association. He was a past member of the Carthage Grange, the Republican Club, the Copenhagen Volunteer Fire Department, the Eastern Milk Producers, the Copenhagen Civic Club and the Copenhagen Hound Club.
