Notes for Alice Paiza Mae BARNUM


Obituary: In Loving Memory of Alice P.M. Richardson. Alice “Peachie” Paiza Mae Richardson, 50, of 18975 Minkler Road, Adams Center, N.Y.,passed away Tuesday, May 13th, at the Hospice Home of Jefferson County after a lengthy and courageous battle with Glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor.
Born December 5, 1963, in Lowville, a daughter of Alice Makuch Barnum and the late LD Barnum Jr, she attended school at Carthage Central and graduated from General Brown Central in 1982. In 1986, she graduated from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) with a Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Biology.
After graduation, Alice began her career as a Research Technician for SUNY ESF and later a Senior Aquatic Technician for Icthyologial Associates Inc, Lansing, N.Y. In 1991, she affiliated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a Fish and Wildlife Technician. In November 2000, Alice was assigned as a Senior Habitat Ecologist where her primary responsibility was to represent the NYSDEC in FERC regulation projects. Through her passion for the environment, Alice was skilled in identifying potential negative impacts and through her foresight was able to find practical alternatives in water conservation. Alice received an Employee Recognition Award in March 2014 from NYSDEC Region 6 for her many years of professional service.
Alice married Christopher A. Richardson on September 27, 1986 at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Reverend Walter Giles and Reverend Harry Little officiating. She was a devoted wife and mother with a strong sense of family and friendship.
Alice is remembered for her talents in canning, baking, sewing, quilting and as an extremely avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. She was an accomplished deer, turkey and waterfowl hunter and enjoyed many peaceful mornings hunting with her children and close friends. She often stated that there is nothing better than sitting in a deer stand enjoying the warmth of the sun as it rose in the morning with the overall peacefulness of the new day. She was always willing to share her hunting stories and knowledge with others and supported youth hunting. As a license issuing agent, she would be found stationed each year at the New York State Fair providing assistance with the sales of NYS Sporting Licenses. Alice was also very active in the Episcopal Church and is remembered for playing her clarinet in the church ensemble and teaching Sunday School.
Surviving is her husband of 27 years, Christopher A. Richardson; her beloved children Andrew C. (Cassandra) Richardson of Worth, Scott LD, Kathleen C., and Jessie M. of Adams Center; her loving mother, Alice M. Barnum, Watertown; four brothers, Anthony M. Barnum, Antwerp, Wayne J. (Margo) Barnum, Fredericksburg,VA, James LD, and Nathan S. Barnum, both of Watertown; two sisters Mrs. Terry (Linda) Nevil, Ontario, N.Y., and Mrs. Steven (Ann) Adams, Watertown; and 14 nieces and nephews. Alice is pre-deceased by her father, LD Barnum Jr, and infant brother, Steven Barnum.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Adams, N. Y., 11:11am, on Saturday, May 24th , 2014. A reception will follow the service.

Alice’s family wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to the communities of Adams, Adams Center; the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the staff of Hospice and to her friends and co-workers at the DEC for their contributions, care, and ongoing support throughout Alice’s illness.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made on Alice’s behalf to Hospice of Jefferson County, Hunters Helping Kids Inc. Northern New York Chapter, and the South Jefferson Rescue Squad.
