In 1874 Harmon Barnum was taxed on one horse valued at $25; in 1875 on three horses, five cattle, a watch valued at $5, and three vehicles; in 1878 on two horses, two hogs, and three pleasure carriages. In 1878 the Atlas of Fifteen Miles Around Washington, Falls Church District #4 showed him as residing at Cottage Farm. In actuality, his mother was the owner of the farm.
