From the Berkshire Eagle, April 27, 2011: Mr. Milton W. Barnum, 89, of Cook Road in Sheffield died Monday, April 25, 2011 at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington. A native and lifelong resident of Sheffield he was born April 19, 1922 at the family home in Sheffield. He was the son of Allen and Iona Warren Barnum and graduated from the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. A veteran of World War II Milt joined the U.S. Army of December 11, 1943. He served in Central Europe and the Rhineland, he received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal for his service. He was honorably discharged on February 20, 1946. For eight years he worked for Richard Combes at the Combes Lumber Co. then bought the company and renamed it Mt. Everett Lumber which he owned and operated for 22 years. An active member of the community Milt was a member of the American Legion Post # 340 in Sheffield, the Sheffield Finance Committee and the Sheffield Cemetery Association. He was a founding member of the Sheffield Historical Society, one of the original members of the Sheffield Businessmen's Association as well as a member, senior past Master and Chaplain of the Masonic Wisdom Lodge in West Stockbridge and of the Melha Shrine Temple AANOMS. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Great Barrington and the Trinity Methodist Church in Ashley Falls for many years. He is survived by his wife, the former Marion Mead of Sheffield. The couple would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 31st. He also leaves his son Dana W. Barnum and his wife Deborah of Sheffield, his granddaughters Candace Barnum and her fiance Matthew Banach and Karrie Barnum and her partner Jeremiah Cronin along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Dawn Barnum in 1959. He was also predeceased by all his brothers and sisters. The funeral service for Milton W. Barnum will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Burial will follow at Sheffield Center Cemetery.
