From the Greene County Examiner-Recorder, Catskill, NY, Thursday, January 22, 1948: John Barnum of Haines Falls passed away at Dale Sanitarium in Saugerties on Thursday, January 22. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Barnum was born in the town of Lexington on September 27, 1867 the son of the late Bethuel and Mary Bunt Barnum. He is survived by his wife Myrtle Grant Barnum of Haines Falls; three daughters, Mrs. Welthie Andrus of New Britain, Connecticut, Mrs. Edna Haines and Mrs. Gertrude Green of Haines Falls; three sons, Claude of Torrington, Connecticut, Clinton of New Paltz, and Bethuel of Kerhonkson; one brother Levi of Maplecrest and several grandchildren.. Burial was in the family plot in Maplecrest Cemetery.
Maplecrest (Big Hollow) Cemetery, Town of Windham, Greene County, NY. Section 1. The Maplecrest Cemetery (formerly known as the Big Hollow Cemetery) is located along the west side of County Route 56, three-tenths of a mile from the intersection of County Routes 40 and 56, in the hamlet of Maplecrest, Town of Windham, Greene County, NY. The name of the hamlet was changed from Big Hollow to Maplecrest on May 23, 1921. Burials made prior to that date should be recorded in your genealogical records as having been made in the Big Hollow Cemetery, as that is what will appear on death certificates and in newspaper accounts. Burials made on or after that date should be recorded as taking place in the Maplecrest Cemetery.
