William Harrison Barnum was named after William (Henry) Harrison, who had gained an enviable military reputation as an Army officer in the War of 1812. He had scored major victories against the Indian and British allies at the battles of Tippecanoe (Nov. 7, 1811) and The Thames (Oct 5, 1813). Later, William Henry Harrison became the ninth president of the United States, serving for only one month (1841) before dying of pneumonia.
