Notes for Levi BARNUM


There are records showing that Levi and Millie lived in both Bradford County and Tioga County, Pennsylvania; and in Chemung County, New York. The 1900 Directory for City of Elmira, NY and Elmira Heights, NY in Chemung County shows the home of Levi Barnum on Cleveland, corner of Lynwood Avenue.

In letters written to his family during the Civil War, James B. Wood mentions both Levi and Smith Barnum. James B. Wood was from Troy, PA and was born about 1830. In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Troy censuses he was listed as a cabinetmaker. He and the Barnums were fellow soldiers in the 189th NY Volunteer Infantry.

Levi's widow received a pension as an Army Widow.

The 1860 Troy Township Census, Bradford County, PA shows: Dwelling #892, Family #892; Barnum, Levi, 27, M, Farm Laborer, real estate $200, personal estate $50, b. NY; Amelia, 21, F, b. PA; Walter, 4, M, b. PA; Sarah, 2, F, b. PA.

The 1870 Census - Leroy Township, Bradford County, PA shows: Household #230, Family #227; Barnum, Levi, 32, M, farmer, b. NY; Emily, 32, F, housekeeper, b. PA; Walter, 13, M, at home, b. PA; Sarah, F, at home, b. PA; Julia, 5, F, at home, b. PA; John M., 3m, M, at home, b. PA.

In the 1880 Census for Leroy Township, Bradford County, PA the family of Levi Barnum was enumerated as folllows:

Barnum, Emily; 41; F; wife; keeping house; b. PA; father b. NY; mother b. NY

Barnum, Merton; 10; M; son; b. PA; father b. NY; mother b. PA
He died of cancer (sarcoma of the pharynx).

Obituary in Elmira Gazette and Free Press, March 9, 1905: Levi Barnum - Levi Barnum died this morning at 7:30 o'clock at his home, 100 Cleveland Street, Elmira Heights. The deceased was seventy-three-years of age and was well known about the county. For many years he was the overseer of the poor of the town of Elmira. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Walter Burdett Barnum and John Merton Barnum of Corning; two daughters, Mrs. J.W. Allen and Mrs. J. O. Rundell of Elmira Heights. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. Rev. Nichols and Rev. Fenton of Elmira Heights will officiate and burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery. Levi served in the Civil War, Co. B, 189th Regiment, NY Volunteers. 1860 PA Census Index, Bradford Co., Troy Twp shows Levi, wife Emilia, son Walter (age 3) and daughter, Sarah (age 1). 1900 NY Census, Chemung Co., Town of Elmira, Elmira Heights, NY - Vol. 22, E.D. 36, Sheet 3, Line 56 Barnum, Levi, W, M, born Feb 1832 in NY, age now - 68 living at Cleveland St. Barnum, Emelia M., wife, born Feb 1839 in PA, age now - 61.
He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
