A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
K. Dorsey Barnum — storyteller, musician, character actor, logophile, NRA Instructor, computer pioneer, traveler, poet, and curator of facts and information — passed away on Feb. 22, 2015. If he's not in Heaven (yet), it's because he's stopping to read every road sign on the way. Mr. Barnum was born on June 20, 1933, in Kansas City, MO, to Dr. Kenneth R. Barnum and Alice Lee Waddell Barnum. He went to military school at age 8 and came to love marches, especially "The Washington Post" by Sousa. He later attended Pembroke-Country Day School in Kansas City. From UMKC, he received a BA in Economics and continued his studies in Psychology. He was a member of Psi Chi and Alpha Sigma Phi. He served in the U.S. Army ('53-'55) and was stationed in Japan, where he fell in love with the culture and people. When at the piano, he would take requests from fellow soldiers from around the world, playing old standards and, frequently, “O Canada”. In addition to piano, which he played by ear, Mr. Barnum played guitar, drums, and, sadly, accordion. Professionally, Mr. Barnum was most proud of his work on the UNIVAC 1 (Serial No. 2) as a civilian in the Air Force. Mr. Barnum would later work at and retire from the AFAFC (Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO). In the 1960s in Denver, Mr. Barnum acted in productions with The Trident Theatre, Points East Theatre Workshop, Changing Scene Theatre, and The Analyst Espresso Theatre Cafe. His roles included The Warden in The Brig and an inmate in Peter Weiss's Marat Sade. Years later, he was touched to receive a review calling him a “chameleon” in a series of one-act plays. This man, who loved life, leaves behind 5 daughters (Karen Conrotto, Pamela Bartlett, Jill Shaw, Sarah Jane Wyble, and Jenn LeBlanc), 11 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and a second due in March. He was married three times and was preceded in death by his third wife, Francine Yvonne Jones Barnum of Las Animas, CO, second wife Jewel Ann Scott, and first wife Sylvia Ann Conrotto. Services will be held in Denver, CO, at Saint John's Cathedral, on March 5, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Barnum will be interred in spring with his father and his mother in Missouri.
