Notes for Charlotte Rebecca BARNUM


From The Brewster Standard, Brewster, New York, April 2, 1926: On Tuesday, March 23, 1926 the death of Mrs. Charlotte Betts, aged 75 years, a former resident of Brewster, occurred at the hospital, New Milford, Connecticut. During the early years of her life Mrs. Betts resided in Brewster. She was left a widow with three sons, George, Horace and Hanford all of whom survive. Her courage and resourcefulness in bringing up her children and managed her farm won the love and admiration of all who knew her. For many years Mrs. Betts was engaged in nursing, and she was well known in Carmel where she resided with the Cole family. Mrs. Betts is survived by her brother, L. Starr Barnum of Danbury, and two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Pugsley of Patterson and Mrs. Minnie Durga of New Milford, Conn. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church of Carmel, and interment was in the Four Corners Cemetery.



Reminiscences written by her sister Minnie Barnum Durga in the Putnam County Courier of October 28, 1927: Mrs. Charlotte Rebecca Betts, Oct. 25, 1849— March 23, 1926. Charlotte Rebecca Barnum, familiarly known as Lottie Barnum, was the eldest daughter of George Barnum of Haviland Hollow. She was a student in the Haviland Hollow School, finishing her education with one term in Mr. Benedict's select school in Patterson village. She began teaching at an early age and was a most capable teacher. Her first term of teaching was in Great Hollow district in 1865-6. All the other terms were in Haviland Hollow. She was united in marriage to Edwin G. Betts in 1875 and became the mother of George, Horace and Hanford Betts.
