From the Putnam County Courier, Carmel, NY, Thursday, July 20, 1939: Mrs. Josephine Barnum Pugsley, widow of the late Lewis G. Pugsley, died at her home on Friday, July 14, 1939, after a short illness. She had been confined to her room for over a year. She had just passed her eighty-eighth birthday. Mrs. Pugsley was born in New Fairfield, Conn., on July 10, 1851, the second daughter of George and Susan Durga Barnum. Her early life was spent In Haviland Hollow. Following her marriage to Lewis Pugsley in 1870, she made her home in Patterson for sixty-nine years, being one of the oldest residents. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are three sons, Edgar, of Pawling and Lewis and Sterling Pugsley, of Patterson, and three daughters, Mrs. William O. Taylor, Mrs. Towner J. Kent, and Miss Minnie Pugsley, four grandchildren, Kenneth Pugsley, of Pawling, and Margaret, Barbara and Eloise Pugsley, one brother, Starr Barnum, in Palmetto, Fla., and one sister, Mrs. Otis W. Durga, of New Milford, Conn. Funeral services were held at her home on Sunday, Rev. Horace Hillery, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating with burial in the family plot in Maple Avenue Cemetery.
