From the Sterling Daily Gazette, Sterling, Illinois, April 9, 1930: Adelia Maria Stocking was born in Prattsville, New York, Greene County on January 21, 1849; therefore she was 81 years, two months and 12 days old at the date of her death, April 3, 1930.
Mrs. Stocking's parents were Abraham (Abram) and Sarah Barnum and she was the last of 11 children. Her father died when she was yet small. When her brother, Henry M. Barnum was married, she, her mother and younger sister came with them to Illinois in February of 1853, and settled on a farm then owned by Deacon Arey where the City of Rock Falls now stands. She lived with her brother until she was married to Zelotus Gilbert Stocking February 10, 1867 at Morrison.
One daughter came to bless this union, Lena (sic, Lana) Meribath, who passed away at the age of 12. They afterwards adopted a boy, Frank Stocking, who for the past five years has been living with the mother, the father having preceded her in death about 13 years ago.
Shortly after her marriage, Mrs. Stocking and her husband moved to Sheridan, Iowa where they took up a homestead. Sometime later they again took up a homestead near Bloomfield, Nebraska.
In the spring of 1905, they returned to Illinois where they purchased a home at 703 Broadway and they continued to live there until the time of their deaths.
Mrs. Stocking was a great home woman and loved very much to work in and around her home. She was a kind friend, a good wife and a loving mother. She was a faithful and consistent member of the First M.E. Church and loved to attend its services when her health permitted. When unable to attend she was fond of making inquiries concerning the welfare of the work. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps for a good many years.
She leaves to mourn her loss her son Frank and his wife, a good number of nephews and nieces and a large circle of neighbors and friends.Â
