From the Wichita Eagle, Kansas, April 13, 2005: Barnum, Caleb (Barney), 89, Devoted husband, father and friend to countless Wichitans passed away Saturday, April 9, 2005. Caleb was born on August 27, 1915 in Gray, OK and was the third oldest child of 12 children. The Barnum Family settled near Goodwell, OK where Caleb attended Panhandle A&M College. Caleb married Lizzie Schaefer in 1937 and worked for Western Auto Supply Co. until entering the Army in 1943 where he served as a Heavy Artillery Trainer until his discharge in 1946. Settling in Wichita, KS, Caleb became a business pioneer by opening the first Dairy Queen in Wichita on S. Broadway. Caleb and Lizzie together operated this business for over 10 years and subsequently owned and operated a drive-in restaurant on S. Seneca for over three years. During this time, Caleb partnered with a local manufacturer and designed, patented and produced the first automated slush-drink dispenser. In 1962, Caleb returned to employment with Western Auto as a retail store manager and managed various locations in Wichita. He later transferred to a management position in the Western Auto Distribution Center on Zimmerly St and retired in the mid-1970's. Caleb embarked on a new career at A.I.D.S. in Wichita through the 80's as a part-time aircraft instrument repair technician. This allowed Caleb the time to pursue a lifelong hobby of clock and watch repair for many of his friends. Caleb enjoyed this hobby throughout the remaining years of his life. Caleb and Lizzie practiced their faith in God at the Central Assembly of God Church and in later years at the Linwood Church of the Nazarene. Caleb is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Lizzie, his cherished daughter, Phyllis Carol and by six brothers and one sister. He leaves behind his son, Ronald (Karen) and a grandson, Michael of the Kansas City area.
