A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Phillip Ray Barnum, 76, of Hooker, Ok!a. passed away March 22, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, Okla. Phillip was born May 19, 1932 in Goodweil, Okla. He Was the 11th child born to Fred and Ninnie Barnum. He went to grade school and high school in Goodweil, graduating as valedictorian of his class. He married Jewel Gross in 1951. They had five children: Otis, Judy, Mary, Jeanette and Douglas. In 1967, he married Carolyn Ward and adopted her two daughters, Deborah and Barbara Sue. Phillip farmed for a time and then worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. He moved to Arizona and spent most of his adult life there. After serious health issues forced his retirement, he moved to Perryton, Texas, then moved to Hooker, Okla. to be closer to his daughter. As a young man, Phillip Became a student of the Word of God, sharing his faith by preaching and teaching, as well as writing Bible studies which he was sharing until the time of his death. His special interests included music and electronics. Among other things, he designed and built amplifiers, being one of the first to use integrated circuits, and also built and repaired guitars. As long as his health permitted it, he enjoyed playing guitar and singing many gospel and country songs that he wrote. And for a number of years, he used his creativity in working with the handicapped, always creating new tools and processes to help them reach their potential. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and one sister. He is survived by his children; Dr. Otis Barnum of Natchitoches, La, Judy Barnum of Granite City, III, Mary and Mark Witt of Hooker, Okla. Jeanette and Danny Hale of Lindsay, Okla., Doug and Elisha Barnum of Woodward, Okla., Deborah and Andy Anderson of Apache Junction, Ariz, and Barbara Sue Ruiz of Apache Junction, Ariz; , nine grandchildren, two sisters, Drusilla Fleming of Van, Texas and Phoebe and Willie Grice of Dumas, Texas, many nieces and nephews, many friends and a very special friend, Barbara Nereson. Phillip made it very clear that his body was to be donated to medical science to help further medical training and knowledge and that no formal memorial service was to be held. Those request are being honored. The benefits to humankind are enormous. Medical training that involves the use of human tissue can advance the knowledge and skills of physical and surgeons. Those who loved him are very sad that he is "absent from the body" but very thankful in the confidence that he is "present with the Lord."
At his request, his body was donated to medical science.
