In one source, her given name appears as Besabe and in another as Bersaville. Bersabe Fernández Barnum was a Presbyterian, although her family had been Catholic. Apparently, the Presbyterians converted many of the residents of that part of New Mexico and many families in the area are now Presbyterians. Bersabe's daughter Lydia (known as Mae) was, however, baptized as a Catholic. It is rumored that was done to forge an alliance with an important Catholic family.
