Notes for Nile Harlow BARNUM


Nile H Barnum (December 4, 1925 - July 11, 2016). Nile Harlow Barnum of Glasco died Monday, July 11, 2016 at the Nicol Home in Glasco. Nile was born December 4, 1925 on a farm near Glasco, Kansas to Robert Lewis and Laura Alice Hight Barnum. He graduated from Glasco Rural High School in 1943. Nile was named after his grandfather Harlow Barnum, Jr., who, in 1873 traveled here in a covered wagon from Iowa to Cloud County, Kansas. He homesteaded the farm which he and family farmed for many years. Nile farmed on the Hight Farm from 1949-1953 then on the Barnum family homestead beginning in 1958; he remained there until 1991 when he sold the farm and moved into Glasco. Farming was in his blood and he really enjoyed being a farmer and working on and fixing farm machinery. He also enjoyed hunting and tinkering with almost anything and greatly enjoyed time with his family.Nile spent two years in the United States Navy from 1944 through 1946. He proudly served aboard the USS Bottineau, and always had many stories to share along with pictures.He married Mary Collins in 1949 and their marriage ended in 1974. Then he married Joan McCullick on August 15, 1975.Nile was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Laura; sisters Maxine Pinney, Neva Barnum Rogers; brother Robert Otto Barnum; grandson Robert Griffith, and step grandson Mason McHenry.Survivors are his wife Joan Barnum of Glasco; sons Mike Barnum and wife Marty Priddy-Barnum of Greenville, NC, Mitch Barnum and wife Pam of Fort Worth, TX; daughter Sandy Griffith and husband Rick of Salina, KS; stepdaughter Michele McHenry and husband Jeff of Delphos, KS; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 15, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Glasco. Burial with military honors will follow in the Highland Church Cemetery near Jamestown. Memorials may be given to the Highland Church Restoration Fund. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the Dean Funeral Home in Glasco.
