A contemporary newspaper reported that Elmer died from coal gas fumes in Frackville, Pennsylvania. His brother William Barnum received a telegram on March 1, 1898, stating that Elmer had been found dead. Elmer had been buried in Pennsylvania, but William took the noon train on March 3rd to Frackville to
retrieve his remains and to find out the cause of his death. William returned to Black River Falls on March 9th with Elmer’s body. Funeral services were held at the Shamrock Union Church on March 9th and Elmer was buried in the Shamrock Union Cemetery in Manchester, Wisconsin.
