She lived just 20 hours.
Emma was born in a small cabin built along the creek south of the present Barnum House. Her parents had moved there following the burning of their original home while it was occupied by British troops billeted there during the War of 1812. The Barnum House Museum now has a note in her mother's handwriting. "Emma Maria Barnum, born January 14, 1814, Fryday [sic] at one A.M., died at 8:00 P.M. aged 20 hours, sweet by thy sleep my lovely babe. Hannah Barnum." The poignancy cannot be missed, and is underlined by the fact that it was another four years before Eliakim and Hannah had their second child - their son Eliakim Smith Barnum.
