Eli Barnum Bennett was in the dry goods business for many years in Norwalk, Connecticut. and was town treasurer of Norwalk for fifty-two consecutive years; was twice a member of the State legislature. He was a director in the Fairfield County Bank, Norwalk for many years, and was considered to be one of Norwalk's most upright and prominent citizens. He joined the First Congregational Church late in life. His death, of heart failure, was very sudden and unexpected. He had gone to his barn to feed cattle, and he was found dead by his son John F. Bennett. At his burial, all the stores in Norwalk were closed.
