A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Excerpts from a typescript provided in 1985 by Mrs. Harvey Stoller of Dayton, Oregon: Plans came quickly to a focus. A Salvation Army man, a Mr. Albert Whaley, wanted to go to Oakesdale [Washington] as he had relatives there [his brothers Milo and Charles Austin Whaley] and thought he might get work and possibly a homestead on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation. His nephew [Herbert Arthur Whaley] had married one of my cousins, Ola Cave [Viola May Cave]. Mr. Whaley was to take his son, Charlie, who was 14 at that time. They had four or five dollars for the trip. Mr. Westall had four dollars and I had $6.50 as I remember... On the first day of July 1898 I said goodbye to Western Washington that I hoped was forever... We left Chehalis in the forenoon and had dinner at Skookumchuck River under big maple trees. We reached and passed through Tenino that evening and camped just north of town... The five of us made down beds on the ground under a large spreading fir tree. What cared we for cones or sticks under our backs? [Added more than a week later] We had been in Walla Walla about a week and the horses were rested so we started just after noon one day... Mr. Whaley had gotten work in Walla Walla and taken Charlie with him so it was just the three of us from there on.
From An Illustrated History Of North Idaho Embracing Nez Perces, Idaho, Latah, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties, State of Idaho Western Historical Publishing Company, 1903: Albert D. Whaley is one of the industrious and enterprising men whose hands have brought the excellent products from the reservation lands that make Nez Perces county one of the best in the state of Idaho. He resides on a farm immediately north from Summit and gives his attention largely to truck farming and raising hogs and poultry. Mr. Whaley is making a fine success of his labors and has this year one of the finest onion patches of one acre to be found in the entire county.
Albert D. Whaley was born in Lake County, Illinois, on March 22, 1852, being the son of David and Prudence (Corser) Whaley, natives of New York and Vermont, respectively. The mother went to Illinois in an early day with her parents in a wagon. Mr. Whaley had two brothers, Charles A. and Cyrus C., in the Civil war, both being privates in the Twelfth Michigan. Charles lives in Oakesdale, Washington, and Cyrus lives in Kansas. His other brothers are Marcus, in Kansas, and Marlow, in Oakesdale.
Mr. Whaley married Miss Irene, daughter of John W. and Elizabeth (Smith) Dinwiddie. After the (Civil) War the parents of our subject came to Douglas County Kansas, and there and in his native place, Albert was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools. When he was twenty-one he went for himself and worked on the railroad and followed other occupations, also purchasing eighty acres which he rented. In 1888 he came from Kansas to Oakesdale, Washington, and farmed for three years and then went to Chehalis, where he was engaged in timber work for seven years. In 1898 Mr. Whaley filed on his present place and since that time he has devoted his energies to its improvement and development. He has a comfortable home and is one of the thrifty residents of the community. To Mr. and Mrs. Whaley there have been born the following children, Charles J. [initial should be A.], Maude L., Lester Z., Lizzie I. [initial should be M.], Floyd W. Mr. Whaley is a Prohibitionist in politics, while he and his wife are soldiers in the Salvation Army, holding their enrollment at Chehalis. While there, Mrs. Whaley was Sergeant Major, having charge of the children's branch. Our subject and his wife are highly respected and are valuable acquisitions to the community.

[Note: living next door, in Dwelling 20, was the family of Lorenzo Dow Pruitt. Lorenzo's son Albert C. Pruitt married Lizzie Whaley just 12 days after the date of this census and one day after the bride's 18th birthday].

From the Linn Digest, 8 February 1929: Albert David Whaley was born at Waukegan, Ill., March 22, 1852 and departed this life at his home in Weippe, Idaho, January 24, 1929 at the age of 77 yrs. and 10 months. He came to Lawrence, Kansas in 1869, from there to Palmer, where he met and married Irene Dinwiddie on January 30, 1881, going west four years later. The union was blessed with five children, all of whom are living.
He leaves to mourn his departure the following children: Charles Whaley of Woodland, California; Maude Tice of Independence, Oregon; and Hester and Lloyd of Weippe, Idaho; Lizzie Pruitt of Burns, Oregon; nine grandchildren, three great grand children; three brothers besides a host of friends and neighbors.
Mr. Whaley will be remembered by some of the older residents of our community
Obituary, from an unidentified contemporary newspaper: Albert D. Whaley Dies. Albert David Whaley, resident of Weippe and Fraser for many years, died at his home in Weippe Thursday, January 24th, at the age of 77 years and ten months. Death resulted from old age and natural complications, following a comparatively long period of sickness. Albert David Whaley was born at Wakegan [sic], Illinois, March 22, 1852, and went from there to Palmer, Kansas, in 1869, where he married Irene Dinwiddie, January 30, 1881. He came west in 1885 and finally located permanently in Clearwater county, residing here for many years. Besides his widow he leaves five children, Charles Whaley of Woodland, California; Maude Tice, Independence, Oregon; Lizzie Pruitt, Burns, Oregon; and Lester and Floyd Whaley, both of Weippe. Nine grandchildren and three brothers also survive. Funeral services were conducted by W. D. Pinson of the Orofino Mortuary at the Community hall, Weippe, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial was made in the Weippe cemetery.
