Summary from obituary, The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus, February 7, 2004: Margaret P. Cheney, 88, of Rock Island, Illinois died Thursday, February 5, 2004, at her home. Private inurnment will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. The former Margaret Phillippe was born July 15, 1915, in Rushville, Nebraska, daughter of Charles and Alice Hitchens Phillippe. She married Thomas W. Cheney October 15, 1938, in Lincoln, Neb. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October 2003. Mrs. Cheney graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1937, with a major in music. While at the university, she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority and Mortar Board. She taught briefly at Unavilla, Neb., High School. Margaret was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and deacon. She taught a women's Bible class at the church for more than 30 years and was a member of the church choir. Mrs. Cheney was a member and past president of Chapter BK of the PEO Sisterhood and a member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, where she was an avid golfer and bridge player. Margaret had served on the board of directors of the former Huber Home, Franciscan Hospital Auxiliary, YWCA and Marriage and Family Counseling Service. She had served as a volunteer for The Argus Santa, Quad City Open and delivered Meals on Wheels. Margaret was an excellent fisherwoman and enjoyed traveling worldwide with her husband. Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry Keim, Goldsboro, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas C. and Eileen Cheney, Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Steven Keim, Marsha Keim Ollie, John Keim and Matthew and Brian Cheney; and great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Olivia, Rose, Kate and Nathaniel. She was preceded in death by her brother.
