A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname

Notes for Sarah

Sarah was Mrs. Sarah Gray, who married Francis Barnum between 1783 and 1785. Dorset Land Records, April, 1803, show: "Sarah Barnum, widow of Frances (sic) Barnum, deceased. . ."

Sarah’s son Isaiah Gray is in the family list of Pastor Pratt of Dorset, who called him ‘of near Danbury’. Sarah Barnum died at Dorset in 1813.

Pastor Pratt of Dorset made very thorough outlines of the early families of his Congregational Church. Amos and Catherine Thompson are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, but are not included in the ‘genealogies’. In Zephrine Humphrey’s “Gazetteer…” Amos was noted for ‘questioning’ the minister. That, along with the lack of Barnum, Thompson or Borland families in the ‘genealogies’ suggests that they were of a different religion. The only Barnum mentioned was the Zalmon, who married a Shumway. The reference appears because of a cross reference to the Shumway line. When Amos and Mahala moved to Wisconsin they were Methodists.
