A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Published March 11, 2008. In the Review Journal of Las Vegas, Nevada: Zina Barnum returned to her Heavenly Father March 7, 2008. Zina was born in Hurricane, Utah Sept. 25, 1921, to Calvin Dudley Barnum and Lucy Jepson. The family moved to Las Vegas in 1923. They lived "on the edge of town" at 329 North 11th St. She graduated from Las Vegas High School at age 16 and immediately began working to help support her family and widowed mother. During World War II Zina proudly served in the US Navy and was in the Navy Reserve until 1981. She taught many of her nieces and nephews to walk smartly with a cadence. She was intensely patriotic and felt it her civic duty to fly the American flag at every opportunity. Zina loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the world. Her home was a treasure chest of items she picked up around the world and each item reminded her of a trip or time spent in a country while working with the Civil Service. She was conversant in English, Spanish, French, German and Japanese. Zina was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served a mission for the church in Texas, which was known as the Spanish American Mission at the time. She learned fluent Spanish and used it throughout her life. In later years, she taught Spanish to workers at the Las Vegas temple. Among many other callings, Zina served as president of the Young Women in several different countries, including Tokyo Japan, Weisbauden, Germany, and Paris, France. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Zina was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bruce, Roston, Wesley, Gail and Thornley; and by her sisters, Louise, Helen and Ethel. She is survived by one brother, Norman of Ogden, Utah; and 30 nieces and nephews who love her dearly. A viewing will be held at Bunker Brothers Mortuary on Las Vegas Blvd. North, from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12. You may also greet the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held at the Pecos and Osage LDS chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.
