Obituary in the Ithaca Journal, Friday, March 23, 2001. Helen B. Cole, 82, of 436 N. Tioga Street, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Oak Hill Manor. Born January 1, 1919 in Trenton, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Maude Wallace Barnum and the wife of the late Haines W. Cole who died in 1978. A 1937 graduate of Ithaca High School, Mrs. Cole was the Coordinator of Volunteers at Cayuga Medical Center. Known for her warmth, intelligence and outgoing personality, she was very active in the Saint John´s Episcopal Church altar guild. She had been a board member of the Women´s Community Building from 1968-71 and 1971-74, and was a member of the City Federation of Women organization and the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Cole enjoyed the theatre and her collection of fine china and silver. In addition, she was an avid gardener and especially loved her cat, "Kitty." Mrs. Cole is survived by her son, Haines B. "Barny" (Connie) Cole of Ithaca; her husband´s daughter, Judith (Wayne) Coates of Orlando, Florida; grandson, Kelly Denison Cole and his wife, Kira, and granddaughter, Keitha B. Cole; cousin, Shirley (Bob) Chantler of Massachusetts and her very dear lifelong friend, Virginia Cobb of Ithaca. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs Cole was also predeceased by her son, Robert Stephen Cole in 1966. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, March 23, 2001 at Saint John´s Episcopal Church, Rev. Phillip Snyder officiating. Spring burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saint John´s Altar Guild, The Hangar Theatre or The Women´s Community Building. The E.C. Wagner Funeral Home of Ithaca is in charge of arrangements.
