From the Wenatchee World, Washington State, August 8, 2001: In loving memory, Jerry Eugene Barnum of Yakima passed away on August 4, 2001, after a brief illness. Jerry was born on May 15, 1925, in Kingfisher, OK, to Ted and Zella Barnum; one of four brothers.
After graduating from high school in Entiat in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served two years as a Radioman 2nd Class. Upon his discharge from the 7th fleet, he received an Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, a letter of commendation from the President, and a "Victory" medal for his excellent service. Jerry was a graduate of Eastern Washington University, where he acquired his teaching certificate. He taught at Moses Lake Jr. High School and Ephrata Elementary School for a combined seven years before starting his own janitorial business and restaurant maintenance company. He was also a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout leader.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Elsie Barnum of Yakima, to whom he was married for 55 years; his children, Michele Cooper and her husband, Gary, of Marysville; Kathy Rodrigues and her husband, Rod, of Spokane; Wes Barnum of Yakima; Claudia Hendrickson and her husband, Dave, of Spokane; Dan Barnum of Yakima; Carrie Hogue and her husband, Steve, of Spokane; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2001, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, at 1614 McKinley Avenue, Yakima.
