From an unnamed contemporary newspaper: Barnum, Mary Doherty Tafel,87, of Louisville, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, September 15, 2014 surrounded by loving family. Mary Doherty's life was marked by great devotion to her family. She was never happier than when all her children and grandchildren were gathered, talking and laughing together. Her beautiful and strong spirit, graciousness and unwavering faith touched everyone who knew her. Mary Doherty was born February 12, 1927 in Louisville, the daughter of Mary and Paul Tafel. She enjoyed a wonderful Kenwood Hill and Cherokee Gardens childhood with her two sisters, three brothers and pony, Wingsey. She excelled in field hockey at Sacred Heart Academy prior to attending Rosemont College in Pennsylvania. Mary Doherty earned her bachelor's degree from Barry University in Florida. After meeting the love of her life, George Campbell Barnum, the couple married on Halloween in 1953. Their strong union, blessed with six children; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, continued for 59 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Barnum; brother, Paul Tafel, Jr.; sister, Betsy Steele; daughter, Laura Barnum; and grandsons, Sam Schubert and Allen Dentinger.Her memory will be treasured by her sister, Patricia Kirchdorfer; brothers, Bill Tafel and Jack Tafel; children, Betsy Hicks (David), Margie Schubert (Allen), Mary Colgin (Andy), Campbell Barnum (Laura), Karen Dentinger; grandchildren, Jack Zampolin, George Schubert, Peter Schubert, Charlie Schubert, Doherty Riebesell (Ryan), Mason Colgin, Keefer Barnum, Baylor Barnum, Brooks Barnum, Taylor Jessie (Jacob), Evie Dentinger, Teddy Dentinger; great-granddaughters, June Jessie, Avery Riebesell, and her dear friends, especially her bridge group.
