Althea is listed in the 1870 Dunlap, Harrison County, IA census as keeping house for her father. She's listed in the Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska 1880 census as 45 years of age, occupation nurse. Apparently she never married and she continued to use her maiden name. She was living in house #103, two doors away from her brother Horace W. Barnum. There was a young servant girl in the house with her, on 18th Street in Omaha. The census was taken June 24th , 1880.
Age at death 48 yrs. Occupation: Nurse. Martial Status: S. Residence: 1124 N 18th St. Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Cause of Death: Heart Disease. Date of Death: Dec 25, 1882. Duration of Illness: 2 yrs. Date of interment: Dec. 26, 1882. Place of Interment: Prospect Hill Cemetery, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Notes: H W Barnum. [This would have been her brother, Horace W. Barnum. He probably made the funeral arrangements. The address given - 1124 N 18th St., is the home of her brother, Horace Barnum. Horace seems to have been the care-giver for all of the family, as at one time or another most of them lived in his house].
Prospect Hill Cemetery, where she was buried, is the oldest cemetery in Omaha and now a Historical Site.
