Notes for Joseph Richard BARNUM

Joe, Jr. was a man who never achieved his possibilities. He was a gifted painter with above-average intelligence, but wouldn't settle down to a 9-to-5 job. He joined the Merchant Marine in WWII and later joined the regular Marines. He had intensive training in electronics during the time he was in the Marines and worked at the Point Mugu missile range for a time after the War. Point Mugu missile range is located on the coast between Oxnard and Santa Monica, California. Joe also worked at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. He made his own telescope and ground his own lens, which was about 5 inches in diameter. Joe was in the veterans hospital in Los Angeles during the San Fernando (Sylmar) earthquake of 1971 that killed 65 people. That was a magnitude 6.6 earthquake and most of the 65 deaths occurred in that hospital. He was diagnosed with heart trouble at that time and died of a heart attack about 12 years later, at the age of 55.
