Saturday, February 9, 2002: Bert B. Barnum, age 96, of Hambden Twp., died December 31, 2001 at Lake West Hospital, Willoughby, OH. He was born on October 21, 1905 in Chardon. He was a lifelong Geauga County resident. Bert B. Barnum married Ethel R. Marx on August 15, 1927 in Erie, PA. Mr. Barnum was owner/operator of Chapman Shoe Store on the Chardon Square for 62 years, retiring in 1985. He was a 1927 graduate of Chardon High School, member of Saint Mary's Church in Chardon, 60 year member of Chardon Lodge # 93, F&AM, now Village Lodge # 274 in Burton Village. Mr. Barnum was a former Geauga County Posse member, a former member of the Hambden Volunteer Fire Dept., an active member of the Chardon Volunteer Fire Department, the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce, and as an expert of local Geauga County history. Mr. Barnum had no near equal. He enjoyed raising Polled Hereford cattle and also loved horses. Bert is survived by his daughters: Doris (Ralph) Hanna of Evansdale, IN, Caroline Ucker of Tarpon Springs, FL; 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Marx Barnum; parents, Hiram Sizer and Ella (nee Gould) Barnum; sisters, Lucy Irena and Elsie Painter; brothers, Forest ("Curly") and Bobbie Floyd Barnum. Burial was in Chardon Municipal Cemetery, Chardon.
He was buried in Chardon Cemetery.
