Charles Donald Barnum was often called C. Donald or Donald.
From the Daily Inter Lake, Kalispell, Montana, July 30, 1974: C. Donald Barnum, 74, of Kalispell, passed away in Kalispell Monday evening (July 29, 1974). He was born November 5, 1899, in Delphos, Kansas, a son of Gordon E. and Alice Cunningham Barnum. When a small child, his parents moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and in 1910 to the Flathead Valley. The family lived on a farm in the Fairview District where he attended grade school and was graduated from Flathead County High School in the class of 1918. On June 23, 1923, he was married to Grace Johnston in Missoula, and after one year spent in Oregon, they returned to make their home in and near Whitefish. Mr. Barnum was engaged in logging operations for a short lime and then was employed by the Great Northern Railway. In 1932, be entered the National Park Service, working as a fire guard, ranger, assistant chief ranger, fire chief and upon his retirement in 1964, was management assistant to the superintendent. He worked a total of 32 years in the Park Service all in Glacier National Park. During those years of public service he made innumerable close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Dick in 1965. He is now survived by his widow, Grace, at home; two brothers, Frank of Miles City and Harold of Denver, Colorado; his sister, Mrs. Mildred Ford of Butte and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge of Columbia Falls. Funeral services for Mr. Barnum are being planned for Friday in the Johnson Chapel.
