A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
Charles was a son of Smith Barnum and Freelove Mason. He was born in New York and later moved with his parents to Michigan. In 1850 the US Census states that he was living with his parents in Lenawee County, Michigan. By 1860, he had moved to Montcalm County, Michigan and was still living with his parents.
Charles served as a US Soldier during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company "F", Second Cavalry, September 5, 1861 at Greenville, Michigan for a 3 year term at age 23. The Second Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan and mustered into the United States service October 2, 1861 with an enrollment of 1,163 men. Charles sufferred an injury to the back while serving at Rittsburg, Tennessee in the spring of 1862. He was discharged early for the disability, at Detroit on July 16, 1862. He served for 10 months, 11 days.
On June 13, 1863 Charles married Amy Eleanor Mosier at the residence of Mr. L. Willis in Lyons, Ionia County, Michigan. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Furguson.
On Febuary 14, 1865, Charles reenlisted in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry, Company "E" at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He then mustered the following day and joined the regiment at Knoxville, Tennessee on March 16, 1865. After serving for 8 months and 27 days, he was discharged on November 11, 1866 at Memphis, Tennessee.
He is found in the 1870 United States Census of Michigan living with his wife (Amy E) and his daughter (Edith). His Occupation at that time is listed as Street Sweeper. He was living in Greenville, Michigan in Montcalm County.
He is found in the 1890 US Veterans Census for Michigan. Montcalm County Supervisor District 3, Enumerator`s District 62.
In 1910 he was living by himself according to the census. He was on his 2nd marriage and had been married for 3 years. The census was taken on May 2, 1910 and he was living at 206 West Charles Street.
In the 1920 United States Census, he was living in Montcalm County, Michigan. He had a woman named Mary J. Carpenter (housekeeper) living with him. After about November 1, 1923, Charles required the regular personal aid and attendance of another person on account of his general weakness and disability, incapacitating him from walking and moving about or otherwise caring for himself.
On his 'Declaration for Pension,' he stated that he was entirely unable to care for himself or to perform any labor or duties whatsoever. He signed this statement on June 12, 1924. It was witnessed by Ella Hall and Mary J Carpenter. According to his Death Certificate, he died of Chronic Myocarditis, with Senility as a contributory factor.
