He was born Sept. 29, 1916, in Chardon, the son of Hiram and Ella (Gould) Barnum. He was a WWII US Army veteran, a member of Chardon Methodist Church and past president and 1962 Man of the Year of Chardon Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Chardon City Council in the early 1960s.
Mr. Barnum worked as a salesman with his brother, Bert, at Chapman Shoe Store on Main Street in Chardon Village from 1948 until 1956 when he purchased the store, selling it in 1963.
