A One-Name Study for the BARNUM/BARNHAM Surname
He is somewhat difficult to follow through the historic record due to changes in his name, birth year, birth place and wife's given name as noted in various documents. In the US Census of 1900 he was listed as William Barnham, born Jan 1858 in Missouri and married to Anna, in the US Census of 1910 he was listed as Augusta [sic] Barnum, born about 1859 in Arkansas and married to Louis A. [sic]; in the US Census of 1920 his wife was listed as Annie Barnum, born abt 1868 in Arkansas and widowed (her full given name was apparently Louisiana). In contemporary city directories he was listed with similar changes: in 1886 he was G. H. Barnum, living in Waco, Texas; in 1889 he was Augustus H. Barnum, living in Austin, Texas; from 1906 through 1915 he lived in Dallas, Texas, and listed himself variously as Augustus H. Barnum, Gustavus H. Barnum and Gus H. Barnum.
