From the Sauk Rapids Sentinel, Sauk Rapids, Benton County, Minnesota, Vol. XXIX, 25 Mar 1897, p. 1: Suicide. A. K. Barnum [sic], Son of Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Barnum, of this Village, Shoots Himself at Spruce Valley, Minnesota. Warren, Minn., March 23. -- Word has just been received here that a party by the name of A. K. Barnum committed suicide in the northeastern part of this county. It is reported that he left the house and went about half a mile and laid down and shot himself with a rifle. The reason given is the usual one of domestic trouble. He recently married a divorced woman and this is the result.---Minneapolis Tribune.
From the Sauk Rapids Sentinel, Sauk Rapids, Benton County, Minnesota, Vol. XXIX, 8 April 1897, p. 4: We regret that the following item in regard to the funeral of Mr. Allen Barnum, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. A. Barnum, which was written for last week's issue of the Sentinel, through some mistake during the publisher's absence did not appear in that issue: "The funeral of Allen Barnum took place on Saturday last from his parents residence on Broadway, and was largely attended. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Appleman. His brother, Warren Barnum, and his sisters, Mrs. I. N. Smith of Staples, and Mrs. R. G. Williamson of Duluth, and the deceased's wife were here to attend the funeral, and the body was laid to rest in the Sauk Rapids Cemetery. The afflicted wife, parents and brothers and sisters have the warm and heartfelt sympathy of all our citizens, and the public in general. The deceased was born in this village, and was highly respected by all our citizens, and his untimely taking away was a sad blow to all of us."
He and his parents are buried in Lot 1, Block 13.
