Notes for Frank Herbert SMITH


Frank was born in Thomaston, Connecticut. He owned hardware stores during his working years in Middletown and Waterbury. The family lived in Middletown and Waterbury, Connecticut. He built a "cottage" on Stannard Beach (on Long Island Sound) in Westbrook, Connecticut in 1900 and it still stands today. Frank introduced the game of basketball to Connecticut. In 1895, when hsaw the game played in Johnsbury, Veromnt, Frank was with the YMCA in Middletown, Connecticut. He bought a basket and set it up at the YMCA running track there and organized a team.
