From the Milwaukee Daily Sentinel, 5 Aug 1854 (www. newspaperarchive.com): Struck by Lightning - We learn from Mr. McCracken of Marquette that during a violent thunderstorm on last Friday morning two very respectable citizens of that place, George Whiting and John Halenslot, were struck by lightning, and immediately killed. They had just taken refuge from the storm under a shed near Mr. Whiting's house, when the electric fluid struck the shed immediately above them—passed down through the covering, which was of hay, striking them on their heads and passing the whole length of their bodies. Strenuous efforts were made to resuscitate them by the application of cold water but they were of no avail.
