Extract of e-mail from Richard J Bigelow to Cynthis Castain, 8/14/2002: "Uncle Buck, EG II, was a salesman much of his life, including selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door during the 30's. When he perished, he was operating a carpet and flooring store. He was a great guy and could produce nickels from my ears, apparently and was brave enough to let me run his motor boat. Lee Ann still lives in their old home on Lake Mitchell." Extract of e-mail from Ruth Bigelow Bilinsky 10/27/2003: "E.G. Jr., your (grand)mom's brother, died in a car accident while on the way to the hospital to see his other sister, my grandmother, Catherine. Early '70's."
From the Mitchell Daily Republic, Mitchell, South Dakota, Tuesday, October 31, 1972:
Memorial services for Eugene G. Barnum Jr., 63, retired Mitchell businessman, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Church with the Rev. Hans Poppe officiating.
Mr. Barnum was killed in a traffic accident Sunday morning (Oct. 29) on Highway 281 about three miles south of Stickney. According to investigating officers Mr. Barnum was apparently confused by the intentions of the driver of another car also headed south and swerved into the left lane of traffic. He apparently lost control of his car which went into the east ditch and rolled.
A car from the west carrying the Rex Anderson family was stopped for the traffic sign and was not involved in the accident, according to the highway patrol.
Mr. Barnum was born February 1, 1909 at Winner, S.D. to Mr. & Mrs. Eugene G. Barnum Sr. and on November 5, 1932 married Blanche A. Kramer at Berkeley, California. He had owned and operated the Barnum Floor Covering firm. He was an associate patron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his widow; a son Eugene Barnum III, Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter Mrs. Lee Ann Overbay, Sacramento, California; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Nicholson, San Bernardino, Calif. And Catherine Bigelow, Winner. The body will go to the medical school at the University of South Dakota.
