"The Siskiyou Pioneer", Vol. 3, #4, The Big Springs Edition. co-editors: Freda Broderick and Helen Sherman, (1948), discusses the trip of Eli Barnum and family. See, also, the 1956 Butte Valley Year Book. Following are incomplete excerpts: Eli and Mary Ann Barnum, with six children (Ben Franklin, Zach Taylor, Rosalie (Hayden), Francis Marion, Clara (Phelps), and Millard Fillmore) traveled from St Jo, Missouri, to the Shasta Valley in 1859. They came along the Yreka branch of the Applegate Trail through the Sheep Rock gap. They lived two years in a place later known as the "Old Dutch Abe" place, then moved on to Little Shasta (to a location now called the Haight place). Bought 240 acres in Grass Lake from John Rohrer in 1874 (known as the Heard Dairy Ranch) and sold it in 1876 to John Waldbridge. They had moved to Sheep Rock in 1875 (the Barnum cabin, one corner built over a spring, still stands). The family was musical, they had a piano, a harmonica, and an accordian, and all loved to sing. Francis Marion Barnum was the first to live on what was later called the White Mountain Ranch (about 1870), for which he traded an old grey mare. The ranch was about 160 acres.
Zachary Taylor Barnum had a large ranch in Little Shasta. His children were Bob, Agnes, Henry, Zach Jr, and Cora. In 1893 the three youngest went to live with their maternal Grandmother Colins on the Klamath River. Brother Abe accepted guardianship of Cora, Henry and Zach. They attended Big Springs school where Aunt Luella taught. Uncles Abe and Scott had a preemption claim at Butte Creek. They dairied in the summer at Cold Springs (later sold to Joe Rose; now Ellis Louie is the owner). It was a sideline, as their main livelihood was obtained from many acres of grain crops. They had 25 diry cows and some pigs. Henry was the "calf boy"; he had charge of the baby calves, skimmed milk, and washed the pans and buckets. In 1900 Eli and Mary Ann moved to Mount Shasta and lived five years with Luella, then moved to Scott Valley. In the Siskiyou News of April 15, 1915: Eli Barnum, the oldest man in Siskiyou County passed on in Callahan, age 98 years 2 months 29 days. He joined the IOOF in 1840 and held continuous membership 75 years, longer than any other member in the history of the order. His death stopped preparations for the 75th anniversary.
