From Souvenir Sketches of Jefferson County, Indiana, pages 262-63. At the Indiana State Library: Daniel Barnum came to Indiana in 1823 and lived there many years. He came down the Ohio River on a raft of lumber, starting from the region of Olean, New York, on the Alleghany River. With this lumber he erected a house and barn. In 1837 he moved to Missouri, remained some years, returned to Indiana. Later went to Oregon and after some ten years returned again to Jefferson County. He married twice and had eight children. He was one of the Early Democratic Abolitionists of early times and was a worker on the underground railroad, between slavery in the south and Canada on the north.
